WGA CHEVROLET SUPERCARS TO ADD MANY THRILLS TO GP2 ASIA WEEKEND

13-Feb-2011

A jam-packed programme of the region’s best circuit racing championships will be supporting the upcoming GP2 Asia Series weekend at Bahrain International Circuit on February 18 and 19.

The WGA Chevrolet Supercars Championship Middle East and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East will ensure that top-class racing will be non stop all through the weekend at ‘The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East’.

A returning favourite for the kingdom’s race fans will be the WGA Chevrolet Supercars, which has been born and bred and Bahrain International Circuit and is now an fully sanctioned championship under the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

Now in its fourth year, the series has reached unparalleled success for that of a regional championship. It has introduced, for the very first time in a Middle East series, the teams concept for its elite SC09 category. With the debut of such squads, they have taken on the responsibility of developing and maintaining their very own challengers. Such duties will be of great benefit for regional motorsport in the future, as technical officials will get to learn the tricks of the trade now that they fully hands-on with the work.

The WGA Chevrolet Supercars has also secured the generous backing of Western Gulf Advisory (WGA), which is a wealth and asset management company based in the Kingdom, whose founder and president now owns Spanish Primera Division football outfit Real Racing Club de Santander.

The championship has so far enjoyed two thrilling rounds that have made for an exciting start to the 2010/2011 season.

Bahraini cousins Raed and Faisal Raffii have so excelled in both meetings and are now heading the SC09 category.

Faisal, driving with Alba Racing Team, won the season-opener at Bahrain International Circuit last December, as part of Speed Weekend Bahrain. Raed, of Batelco Racing, followed that up by winning race two in the same curtain-raising round.

The second meeting of the year, held at Reem International Circuit in Riyadh in January, saw Raed once again celebrating on top of the podium after the first sprint.

Saudi Arabian, Abdulaziz Al Yaeesh of Al Zaid Racing Team, then gave his home fans something to cheer about by taking the chequered flag in race two, less than a second ahead of Raed.

Heading to the upcoming third round in Bahrain as a support event to GP2 Asia, Raed leads the SC09 standings with 59 points, ahead of Faisal who is on 43.

Raed and teammate Mohammed Mattar have put Batelco on top of the team rankings on 73 points. Alba, which features Faisal and partner Mustafa Al Khan, are on 58 points in tied-second place with Lap 57 team, which comprises Dubai-based Australian Tarek Elgammal and Emirati Mohammed Al Owais.

In the SC06 category for highly competitive gentleman racers, young Bahraini Ezra Idafar has so far been the man to beat, rising to the top of the standings with 34 after four races.

Tickets for the GP2 Asia event cost 7 BD for adults for both days of racing. Access to the luxury lounges along Oasis Complex are also available for 45 BD per person. Children aged 15 years old and younger can get in to the event free of charge. All holders of three-day tickets to this year’s Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix can also get in for free.
