STAGE SET FOR DRAG RACING’S PENULTIMATE ROUND

‘Test and Tune’ kick starts action as drivers from across the Gulf battle for supremacy

07-Feb-2012

BIC, Sakhir – The fifth and penultimate round of the 2011/2012 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship gets underway tonight (Wednesday, February 8) with a ‘Test and Tune’ session.

The event is being held as part of the National Racing Festival, which will be running all through the weekend at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

Action along BIC’s quarter-mile drag strip will be run by the Bahrain Drag Racing Club, which is under the umbrella of the Bahrain Motor Federation, and in cooperation with BIC.

The evening’s events are scheduled to begin from 7pm and continue until around 11pm. The tests will help the championship’s participants begin getting ready for the round’s qualifying runs on Thursday (February 9). Race day will then take place on Friday (February 10).

Thursday’s action is scheduled to begin at 7pm. Friday’s programme kick starts at 6pm.

Close to a hundred drivers from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE are expected to take part in what is set to be a highly competitive meeting.

Scores of dragsters took part in the season’s fourth round last month, which was cut short due to dangerous weather conditions. All uncompleted races will be taking place Thursday as part of this weekend’s qualifying runs.

There were a pair of new World records set during round four: Gary White registered a mark of 6.504seconds during qualifying in the Outlaw Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) class while Adel Hassan Mohammed had a run of 9.871s in the final of the Street Front-Wheel-Drive RWD category.

Many more records may be set in the upcoming battles at BIC, as the season draws closer to an exciting final round scheduled for mid-March.

Apart from the Bahrain Drag Racing Championship, this weekend’s National Racing Festival will also feature action in the Western Gulf Advisory (WGA) Supercars Championship Middle East and the BIC 2,000cc Challenge.

The WGA Supercars and the 2,000cc challengers will be out on track on Friday and Saturday (February 10 and 11).

All are welcome to attend the festival. To complement the racing, there will be plenty of off-the-track entertainment for the entire family. Children will be able to enjoy many fun activities such as game stalls, bouncy castles and carnival rides; while plenty of food and beverage stands will also be on hand throughout the day.

Tickets for the festival cost BD5 for all days for seats at the Batelco Grandstand. Children aged 16 years old and below will be able to enter for BD2.5. For seating along the Start Line Grandstand, tickets cost BD7 and BD3.5 for kids.

Ticketholders can watch all the heated action beginning from the WGA Supercars and 2,000cc Challenge in the morning, up until the drag racing in the evening.
