Vettel sees no need to regret past races

Sebastian Vettel says Red Bull Racing has little to achieve by ruing the opportunities that have slipped through its fingers this season - and instead insists its focus should be on getting itself back to the top of the world championship standings.

With Red Bull Racing having taken 10 pole positions out of 11 races so far this year ? but only converting five of those into race wins, team chiefs are well aware how it is becoming more important to deliver better points' hauls on Sundays.

But Vettel reckons his team should waste no time wondering what might have been.

"There is no need to regret anything now," he said at the Hungaroring. "We are midway through the season and we have a lot of races left. We have a fantastic car and, if we wasted our energy on what we could have done, should have done, what would have been, then it would be wrong.

"We would then lose points in the next races and that is not what we want to do. Race by race, step by step, we must quickly realise if we are on the right page to win the championship."

Vettel managed to close the points gap to series leader Lewis Hamilton slightly in Hockenheim last weekend, and thinks it is only a question of time before the RB6 keeps on delivering results he needs.

"The results on Sunday were not very consistent and the points not always big enough, but we have a very strong car," he said. "If you look where we qualify, there is no reason to speak against us finishing in that position on Sunday.

"Sometimes it wasn't easy, sometimes there were a few problems or we did a couple of mistakes, but that is how it goes in a championship. It is up and down, and the most important thing is that we keep our head cool, and look forward step-by-step. Podiums like Hockenheim are good for points and the championship."

Vettel also thinks it too early to say for definite that Ferrari is well and truly back in the title hunt, despite its one-two finish in the German GP.

"I think one race does not mean how it is going to be, or how the strengths of the team are for the next GP," said the German.

"Every circuit is different and so far we have proven we have a very strong car no matter the circuit characteristics. We should be strong here.

"Ferrari did a step forward but the question is how much Hockenheim came in their direction. You may not forget McLaren and also other teams, Renault, Mercedes, if they have a circuit closer to their liking it is always tough. But I am confident that we have a very strong car and that is all that matters to me."
