Red Bull Racing
After being overtaken by its sister Scuderia Toro Rosso B-team to its first win in 2008, Red Bull pulled out all the stops in 2009. The effect of superstar designer Adrian Newey’s arrival finally reared its head, giving Mark Webber and Sebastien Vettel a car that was a victory and title contender from the start of the year to the end.
Dramatic new technical regulations, which drastically cut aerodynamic downforce, allowed Newey – so successful at Williams and McLaren in the 1990s – and young team boss Christian Horner the chance to really flex their mighty brain muscles in 2009. The result was a car that won six races in 2009, and has set the design pace for 2010, with most other teams copying its distinctive features.
Powered by the refueling-ban friendly Renault engine, with an economy that should allow Red Bull to start races with significantly less fuel weight than its rivals, Vettel and Webber may have a chance to go for the big prize in 2010.
