Nico Rosberg put Mercedes back in number one position today as Formula 1 pre-season testing resumed at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
After failing to top the time sheets during the first four-day test session last week, the world champions were boosted on day one of week two with both Rosberg and teammate Lewis Hamilton sharing the duties in their F1 W07 Hybrid.
Nico Rosberg showed the potential of Mercedes’ 2016 machinery and set the pace with a best lap of 1 minute 23.022 seconds.
"It was a decent morning and we’re making progress. It was nice for me to be able to push some more and produce some stronger lap times. We were doing qualifying practice this morning - it’s important to practise that as well. And that’s when it’s all the more enjoyable; taking the car to the limit and really pushing. It’s been a good test, reliability has been good, the speed has been there - it’s all working to plan."
Hamilton managed a fastest time of 1:25.051 to rank sixth on the final classification.
The Mercedes pair will continue to split the time in their car when testing continues on Wednesday.
Valtteri Bottas finished day one in second position with a 1:23.229 lap for Williams. Fernando Alonso followed with a time of 1:24.735 to give McLaren a much-needed boost in their testing programme. Kimi Raikkonen steered his Ferrari to a best lap of 1:24.836 to finish ahead of Hamilton amongst the top runners.
