Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East

In the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East held in support of the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain, Charlie Frijns and Jeffrey Schmidt got the 2015/2016 season off to a positive start.

Frijns topped the first practice timesheet while Schmid was the fastest man in practice two.

In practice one, Frijns had a best lap of 2:06.877 to claim first place. A narrow 0.146secs behind was Irishman Ryan Cullen (+0.146secs) of Cullen Motorsport, while Al Nabooda Racing’s Zaid Ashkanani (+0.250secs) of Kuwait was third.

The Team Bahrain pairing of His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and Shaikh Jaber bin Ali Al Khalifa both had solid runs. His Highness Shaikh Isa was 11th from 15 with a fastest lap of 2:09.588 while Shaikh Jaber followed in 14th with a 2:10.670 lap.

In practice two, it was Schmidt’s time to shine, and he did not disappoint with a fastest lap of 2:05.399. Frijns was ranked behind by just 0.192secs, while in third was Cullen 0.251secs adrift.

His Highness Shaikh Isa was this time in the top 10, classified ninth with a best lap of 2:06.788. Teammate Shaikh Jaber was 14th with a 2:09.439 lap.

MRF Challenge

Meanwhile, Alessio Picariello of Belgium will start from pole in the first of two races on Friday in the MRF Challenge.

Picariello won the leading grid position after topping today’s floodlit qualifying with a best lap of 2:03.390.

Nikita Troitcki of Russia not far behind. She came a mere 0.044secs short of matching the pacesetter. India’s Tarun Reddy took third position 0.048secs back.

A total of 18 cars are set to feature in the MRF grid for this second round of the season.

Troitcki was fastest during earlier in the day during free practice with a lap time of 2:02.766.
