Two-time defending World champion Lewis Hamilton maintained his recent winning ways with a record-breaking victory today at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes ace made it three race wins in a row and fifth overall midway through this ongoing Formula 1 season. The result finally put him in the lead in the drivers’ championship standings after leapfrogging teammate Nico Rosberg to first.
Hamilton started the Grand Prix from the front row alongside pole-sitter Rosberg. He took over as pacesetter with a blistering start at the lights. He had a flawless drive the rest of the way and did well to keep Rosberg behind him.
Hamilton finished the 70-lap race in one hour 40 minutes 30.115 seconds to come away with a record fifth career win at the Hungaroring. Rosberg had to settle for the runner-up finish 1.977 seconds behind. Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo was well behind the front pair, rounding out the podium placers 27.539s back.
Hamilton declared after the race:
"I don’t know what the secret is here. Naturally, having a great team and everything coming together is key. But it’s a track that I think really works well for an aggressive driver."
"Today was one of the hottest races I can remember here. Looking after the tyres in those conditions was really hard, so I’m glad I managed.
"Thank you to everyone in the team for all their hard work - and to all the fans I have here. I don’t know why but, when I go to Budapest, I always seem to have a lot of support. I love it here so it makes for a great week."
Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari followed in fourth ahead of Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who did well to stave off the surges of Kimi Raikkonen in the other Ferrari. McLaren’s Fernando Alonso was seventh and Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz Jr. rounded out the top eight.
