Harrison Newey captured pole position for the season-opening race of the 2016/2017 MRF Challenge, taking place at Bahrain International Circuit this weekend as part of the Bahrain Motorsport Festival.
Newey, the son of Formula 1 design guru Adrian Newey, topped the qualifying timesheet with a best lap time of two minutes 00.316 seconds. He registered a top speed of 161.9kph while setting his fastest time on his seventh of 12 laps of work.
Australian Joey Mawson secured the other front row position with a best lap 0.312 seconds slower.
Ralf Aron of Estonia and Mick Schumacher of Germany qualified third and fourth, respectively.
They were followed by Rinus van Kalmthout of the Netherlands and Kimi Schramm of Germany in row three, and Felipe Drugovich of Brazil and Juri Vips of Estonia.
A total of 17 drivers are scheduled to start race one, which is scheduled for later Friday afternoon at 1.40pm. It will be the first of four over two days.
