Daniel Ricciardo won a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix today
In an eventful and wild race, Ricciardo started from 10th on the grid but thanks to various incidents during the race – including a handful of safety car periods, a red flag and several penalties – the Australian managed to take the chequered flag.
He won in a total race time of two hours three minutes and 55.573 seconds.
It was the fifth victory of his career and first of this Formula 1 season. Ricciardo has been successful recently, with three straight podiums leading up to his Baku success.
The Red Bull Racing ace was 3.904 seconds clear of Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, who managed to classify as runner-up after pipping Williams’s Lance Stroll at the finish. Stroll was 4.009s back. It was the first podium in the young career of Stroll, who is competing in his rookie Formula 1 season.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was fourth and Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton fifth, while Force India’s Esteban Ocon, Haas’s Kevin Magnussen and Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz was eighth.
Pole-sitter Hamilton and Vettel were involved in an on-track incident early on which earned Vettel a penalty.
The Formula 1 season resumes on July 7 with the Austrian Grand Prix.
