Nico Rosberg continued his impeccable start to the 2016 Formula 1 season today after winning the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi in brilliant fashion.
The German started from pole and was undeterred all the way to the chequered flag.
He led hard-charging teammate Lewis Hamilton (+25.022s) to the finish line to complete a fine one-two for Mercedes, while Kimi Raikkonen (+31.998s) of Ferrari clinched the final podium spot in third place.
Rosberg was sensational en route to victory, setting a new lap record in Sochi of 1 minute 39.094 seconds on his penultimate loop of the race.
The result stretched Rosberg’s winning streak to seven in the top flight – dating back to the concluding three Grands Prix of last year and including the first four rounds so far this season.
An elated Rosberg commented:
“This weekend really went really perfectly for me. Already in Qualifying I had found a perfect balance and that continued throughout the race, which was fantastic.
“I had a great start and from there was able to control the pace at the front.
“Thank you so much to everybody at the factories for building such an amazing car. If you have a car like this, you are really able to push to the limits and that’s an awesome feeling.
“It´s unbelievable to go into the European races with four wins and I really look forward to Barcelona now. Thanks, Russia - you were very good to me!”
The FIA Formula 1 World Championship now heads to the Spanish Grand Prix on May 15.
