Team Turkey had twice the reason to celebrate early today in the FIA GT Nations Cup at the Bapco Bahrain GT Festival at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC).
Not only did Salih Yuloc steer Turkey’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 car to first place in Qualifying Race Two, he also helped them secure pole position for the first-ever FIA GT Nations Cup Main Race, which will be making its highly anticipated global debut later this evening.
Their first place result today was added to their second-place finish in Qualifying Race One, when Ayhancan Guven was behind the steering wheel. That earned them pole for the weekend’s headlining event scheduled for 7.30pm under BIC’s floodlights.
Team Belgium, who had earlier won Qualifying Race One on Friday night, had to settle for 15th on the Qualifying Race Two classification, dropping them down in the order of the Main Race grid.
Yuloc won Qualifying Race Two just 1.943 seconds ahead of Team UK, represented by Christopher Buncombe driving a Ferrari 488 GT3.
Team Germany, also competing with a Ferrari 488 GT3, claimed third place with Alexander Mattschull, who was 5.291s back.
The teams from Russia, Argentina and Mexico made up the top six in the 18-car field.
