As the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship wraps up this coming weekend, Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), “The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East”, is already gearing up for next year’s highly anticipated night race in Sakhir.
At a press conference today, BIC announced several exciting details for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2019, taking place March 28 to 31 as the second round of the new season.
The region’s biggest event is set to be the landmark 15th edition of the desert race, and it once again promises to be a spectacular extravaganza of racing and entertainment, held over four days for the first time ever.
BIC Commercial Director Sherif Al Mahdy and Gulf Air Director of Marketing Mohamed Jamsheer spoke this evening at a press conference held at The Avenues – Bahrain, revealing some of the major details of next year’s Formula 1 weekend.
“Every year, we try and raise the bar for our concert programme for F1,” BIC Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa commented. “We are therefore extremely proud to be welcoming the world greatest DJ, Martin Garrix, as the first in our line-up for the race weekend. The combination of the excitement of F1 with the concert line up we are planning will make Bahrain 2019 without doubt our biggest event ever.”
Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Krešimir Kučko added: “This is an exciting time for Gulf Air and the Kingdom of Bahrain as a whole. We are delighted to once again welcome visitors to Bahrain to attend the Formula 1 2019 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. There’s so much to look forward to this year and, on behalf of Gulf Air, we are honoured to be longstanding partners with the Formula 1 and the BIC to bring race to Bahrain year after year.”
BIC Commercial Director Sherif Al Mahdy said: “As the 15th edition of our event, we have put together an extra-special programme of the very best of motorsport and family entertainment, and together with Gulf Air and our other valued partners, we cannot wait to deliver another memorable occasion to Formula 1 fans. Whilst we will be announcing many more exciting plans for the race over the coming weeks, I would urge fans to get booking their tickets quickly, to take advantage of the early bird offer.”
Top DJ Martin Garrix to perform Friday of Grand Prix weekend
Among the major announcements at the press conference was that superstar DJ and record producer Martin Garrix will be performing live on the Friday of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Martin Garrix has risen to global stardom in pop as well as electronic circles. Dance music’s freshest talent has headlined festivals around the globe, founded a label and mentored other artists and won the number 1 spot in DJ Mag’s Top 100 three times in a row.
His hit ‘Animals’, released in June 2013 was a breakout success and a game changer for the music industry. Reaching No. 1 in the UK and many other territories, it proved that a hard-hitting, dancefloor-oriented track could reach pop status, ultimately reaching over a billion streams across several platforms.
His other hits include “Don’t Look Down”, “There for You”, “So Far Away”, “Like I Do”, “In the Name of Love” and “Scared to be Lonely” and he has collaborated with other megastars such as Tiesto, Usher, Avicii and Dua Lipa.
All this success has brought numerous awards including two MTV EMAs in 2016, a ‘Man of Today’ accolade from GQ, a spot among Forbes’ ’30 Under 30’ and another at Billboard’s ‘EDM Power Players’.
Garrix is the first of a number of A-list artists who will be performing at BIC at next year’s Grand Prix. The others will be announced over the next few weeks.
Formula 2 and GT3 Cup Challenge to support Formula 1 on track
Aside from Formula 1, there will be plenty of other action in the Grand Prix with two support races: the FIA Formula 2 Championship and the Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East.
Although the Formula 2 season calendar has yet to be released, Bahrain is the traditional season-opening round of the Formula 2 season and we expect it to be the same next year.
It will be joined by the Porsche BWT GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, one of the most popular championship to come from this region. The series will be celebrating its 10th season and it continues to grow each year. Drivers from all over the world come and compete in this series, which will be holding its championship-finale during the Grand Prix weekend.
Plenty of fun, family entertainment awaits race-goers at Grand Prix
For the first time ever, BIC will be open from Thursday. Fans will be able to enjoy the vending area, take part in a walk down the pit lane and there will be plenty of shows and entertainment for all the family.
This year, attractions over the weekend include for the very first time a Ferris wheel offering views right across the track and beyond. There will also be a Star flyer 60 metres in height, as well as a carousel. In addition, there will be the Formula 1 Game Zone, kids’ attractions, parlour games, roaming performers, stage shows, and so much more!
