BMW M Team WRT shine brightest under lights to top WEC second practice timesheet at BIC
BMW M Team WRT topped the overall timesheet this evening in the second World Endurance Championship (WEC) Free Practice of the 2024 WEC 8 Hours of Bahrain, powered by Bapco Energies.
Their #15 crew of Dries Vanthoor, Raffaele Marciello, and Marco Wittman shone brightest under lights at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir as the 90-minute session wrapped up the first day of action.
They posted a fastest lap of one minute 48.257 seconds in their BMW M Hybrid V8 Hypercar – more than two seconds quicker than the best mark from the morning practice runs.
The Porsche Penske Motorsport #5 crew of Matt Campbell, Michael Christensen, and Frederic Makowiecki followed just 0.054 seconds behind in their Porsche 963, while Ferrari AF Corse’s #51 trio of Antonio Giovinazzi, Alessandro Pier Guidi, and James Calado in the Ferrari 499P came third 0.215s off the pace. The trio were also quickest amongst the 18-strong Hypercar field.
Amongst the LMGT3 contenders, also featuring 18 cars, Akkodis ASP Team’s #87 triumvirate Takeshi Kimura, Esteban Masson, and Jose Maria Lopez set the quickest lap of 2:02.246 in their Lexus RC F LMGT3 car.
TF Sport’s #82 crew of Hiroshi Koizumi, Sebastien Baud, and Daniel Juncadella followed with a 2:02.901 lap in their Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R, while Vista AF Corse’ Francois Heriau, Simon Mann, Alessio Rovera finished third in their #55 Ferrari 296 LMGT3 with a 2:02.991 lap.
The WEC field returns for a 60-minute third Free Practice on Friday, starting at 12noon. The Hypercars and LMGT3s will then battle in separate qualifying sessions from 4pm.
Meanwhile, Colin Boenighausen set the fastest lap in the second free practice this afternoon in round one of the 2024/2025 Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East (PCCME), taking place in support of the WEC this weekend.
Boenighausen posted a time of 2:03.386 in the session, going 0.817s quicker than Khaled Alahmadi. Angus Whiteside completed the overall top three with a mark 0.963s off the leading pace. Boenighausen was also the top finisher amongst the PCCME’s Pro drivers, while Alahmadi led the ProAm field. Topping the times amongst the Masters participants was Petr Brecka with a best lap of 2:05.030.
The PCCME will be back in action on Friday for qualifying at 11.10am followed by the weekend’s first of two races at 5.45pm.
