Carlos Sainz set the pace in the third and final Formula 1 practice session

Carlos Sainz set the pace in the third and final Formula 1 practice session of the F1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2024—the Kingdom’s 20th anniversary F1 weekend taking place at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

The Ferrari star topped the times in the hour-long session, held in cool conditions under the afternoon sun.

He clocked a best lap of one minute 30.824 seconds while completing 18 laps of running.

Sainz’s time was not as quick as Lewis Hamilton’s pace-setting lap from practice two held Thursday night. It did, however, beat Daniel Ricciardo’s timesheet-topping mark from the first practice.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was behind Sainz for Aston Martin with a narrow 0.141 seconds gap, while three-time defending world champion Max Verstappen came third for Red Bull 0.238s back.

Charles Leclerc in the other Ferrari classified fourth 0.270s from his teammate, while Lando Norris of McLaren followed 0.294s from the top. George Russell of Mercedes made it five constructors in the session’s leading six, finishing 0.366s from number one.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was seventh 0.386s off the pace, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished eighth 0.424s from Sainz, while Nico Hulkenberg (+0.454s) of Haas and Lance Stroll (+0.572s) of Aston Martin completed the top 10.

Completing the third practice classification were Ricciardo, Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda of RB, Kevin Magnussen of Haas, Alexander Albon of Williams, Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas of Kick Sauber, Esteban Ocon of Alpine, Logan Sargeant of Williams, and Pierre Gasly of Alpine.

The stage is now set for the first qualifying battles of the F1 season. They will be taking place under the bright floodlights later today evening starting at 7pm.
