BIC wins environment award
At Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) we are extremely conscious of our environment and local community. That’s why we are working hard to raise awareness of environmental issues and proactive in tackling them.
BIC is the only Grand Prix circuit to have a partnership with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).
This initiative involves local schools, universities, farmers and horticulturalists and focuses on the planting, sustainability and sale of indigenous plants, shrubs and trees; it also covers waste management, recycling and environmental responsibility.
In conjunction with UNEP, our ‘BIC Go Green’ initiative has also launched the ‘Project in a Box’ programme for local schoolchildren.
Martin Whitaker, BIC’s CEO, explains: “It’s a simple idea — a recycled cardboard box containing multiple-choice questionnaires, packets of seeds, solar-powered model kits and general information about the environment — but its message is profound.”
BIC is also working closely with the FIA Foundation and Institute on its carbon sequestration activities.
Whitaker: “BIC is understandably proud to be the only Grand Prix circuit granted the prestigious award of an FIA Centre of Excellence.
“We have a duty to remain at the forefront of linking environmental issues to the sport and to continue to use the track and its facilities as a platform for schools and community education.”
