Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), ‘The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East’, flagged off this afternoon the 8 Hours of Bahrain, powered by Bapco Energies – the season-ending round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship.
The day-to-night racing spectacle, featuring a star-studded line-up of drivers and their teams, will continue to battle around BIC’s 5.412-kilometre track until 10pm this evening, making for an ultimate test for their cars and competing pilots.
Prior to the race start, a large crowd of race-goers were treated to the WEC Pit Lane Walk and Autograph Session, which gave them a chance to meet many of motorsport’s biggest names, take pictures with them, and have memorabilia signed. They also got an up-close-and-personal look at the WEC teams and their cars in their respective garages.
Fans were also treated to a pre-race party in BIC’s Main Grandstand, featuring roaming entertainment, interviews with the megastar drivers, music, and all the pre-race build up right before the rip-roaring rolling start down the BIC straight.
Today’s eight-hour spectacle is not the final WEC action of this weekend, as BIC will be hosting on Sunday (3 November) the 2024 WEC Rookie Test.
A total of 28 cars will be hitting the tarmac for the tests, including 13 in the Hypercar category and another 15 amongst the LMGT3s.
Amongst the Hypercar teams, BMW M Team WRT, Ferrari AF Corse, and Peugeot Total Energies will each be fielding two cars, while in the LMGT3 field, Team WRT, Vista AF Corse, United Autosport, Akkodis AP Team, and Proton Competition will feature a pair of challengers.
The tests have been split into two private sessions, first from 10am to 12noon and then from 1pm to 4pm.
Meanwhile, also held today at BIC prior to the WEC’s last race of 2024, Colin Boenighausen stormed to victory from pole position in race two of round one in the 2024/2025 Porsche Carrera Cup Middle East (PCCME), held in support of the WEC 8 Hours of Bahrain, powered by Bapco Energies.
Boenighausen won the 12-lap sprint in 25 minutes 07.189 seconds and enjoyed a 2.458-second gap from runner-up Janne Stiak, who was the winner of the weekend’s first race on Friday.
James Wallis joined them on the podium after finishing 9.891s from Boenighausen in third.
The overall top three were also the leading finishers in the PCCME’s Pro class.
Saud Al Saud was the top man in the Pro Am category, while Mike Mim impressed with a fifth-place finish overall and winning the all-new Masters class.
The race wrapped up the PCCME’s events for the season-opening round at BIC.
