Sir Jackie Stewart to drive tribute lap on Bahrain race day, supporting his Race Against Dementia charity
Sir Jackie Stewart, Formula 1 legend, three-time World Champion, and Race Against Dementia founder, is taking to the track as part of race day for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix to celebrate 75 years of Formula 1 and to support fundraising efforts for the charity. As F1 fans in Bahrain enjoy the build up to the race on Sunday, the three-time world champion will drive his 1973 Tyrell world championship car for a lap around the circuit at 1540pm.
Sir Jackie’s tribute lap in Bahrain will honour the eldest living World Champion, on the 60th anniversary of his F1 debut, racing in his 1973 Tyrrell, over 50 years on from his last race. During his lap, Sir Jackie will also be wearing a one-of-a-kind World Champions’ helmet, featuring the signatures of all 20 living Formula 1 World Champions.
This follows last weeks ‘One Lap Challenge’ organized by the British Embassy in Bahrain and held at Bahrain International Circuit in the build up to the race last week, where over 1,500 people walked, ran and scooted a lap of the Bahrain track, raising over $50,000 for the charity. The cheque donation will be handed over ahead of the lap by His Excellency Alastair Long, the British Ambassador to Bahrain and Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of Bahrain International Circuit.
Sir Jackie founded Race Against Dementia in 2016, and its pioneering programmes, inspired by Formula 1 teams and the speed and innovative approach they take, give researchers the tools, support and mindset to accelerate progress in dementia research.
Mark Stewart, Chair of Race Against Dementia, said:
“Today, we race not just for the past, but for the future. With the support of the F1 community, we’re driving forward progress in finding a cure for dementia.”
